Warren Starkebaum

I've been tailing Warren Starkebaum of Plymouth, Minnesota around for a few years now. He manages to stay ahead of me in the building phase and gets to do much and come up with ideas I end up stealing.

I stopped up to his hangar at Crystal Airport last Sunday to see how the project is going and get further "inspired." He's been sending me various iterations of a panel. They're on the wall behind him there. And I suspect Warren spends much of his time in about-face mode, looking at them and trying to figure out what should go in.

Warren started his research with e-Panel Builder Web site. Registration is required and while some sections of the site are free, enhanced tools are available for $39. Under the free version, I couldn't load a Van's panel; but maybe that was just me. (For a much more expensive option, there's Panel Planner software).

One of the main issues Warren realized at this point was that a couple of ribs behind the panel prevented him from putting things where he wanted. A visit to Paul Hove's RV-7A project at a recent Minnesota Wing of VAF meeting found a solution. Paul had used a modular unit from Affordable Panels.

Their Web site identified the problem and offered their solution. "Our research revealed that the location of the F-745-L gave little choice as to the location of the primary flight instruments. Most, if not all, exhibited a layout which included the airspeed indicator and the artificial horizon located to the left of the F-745-L rib."

What to put in the panel is a whole 'nother story that -- everyone says -- has to do with your "mission," but, let's face it, also has to do with the "he's got one. I want one too" syndrome (oh, did you think everyone actually needed those SUVs?) and how much you're willing to pay to medicate it. On suggestion from Warren on this stage: wait until the last possible minute to buy your avionics. Things are changing fast and prices could be lower.

Building with pizzazz
As much as we love 'em, after awhile, builder sites start to look the same. Here's one where memories are being built in a different way.
Some people take flags to the top of a mountain peak. Richard Socash (father) and Connie Socash (daughter)(daughter)take airplane parts. And they honored World War II flying vets by having a day where they'd work on the plane. This isn't about just building an airplane with tools. This is about building one with love. (Web site)

Storms scupper pilot's record bid
A pilot's attempt to break a flight record in a single-engine "homebuilt" aircraft has been scuppered by bad weather in the Pacific. (BBC) But he has made it across the Pacific. (Web site)

Oregon's RV-16s
The EAA Chapter 105 recently met in a hangar shared by two RV-3 and an RV-10. Here's a great write-up in their spectacular monthly newsletter (pdf)as well as some good advice on those plastic fittings for brake lines. Can't wait for the write-up on the instrument panel clinic.

BUILDER QUICK Q & A & TIPS

Nosewheel bearing:

Q: I still don't have my wheel fairings on. This weekend during preflight I noticed some black goo, tar-like stuff oozing out around the rubber bearing seals on my nosewheel. It did not appear until I had about a dozen landings on the airplane. Since the grease that was in it originally was the normal amber color I was a bit surprised to see this color, and also a bit surprised to see it leaking out as it had been perfectly clean up until this point. Anybody else seen such a thing? (Mark Navratil)

A: Mark, I would assume the dark stuff is grease. as for the tightness/spacers spinning, I noticed the spacers spinning problem (I didn't build the 6a)When
I took off the wheel at cond inspection I ended up adding a washer on one side of spacer which allowed me to tighten the axle bolt properly without binding
the wheel. (Charlie Heathco). See full thread.

Elevator Counterweight
With this simple modification, you can easily and precisely adjust the elevator's counterbalanced weight to accommodate any current or future balancing requirements such as might be confronted after the application of paint. I did this on my -8 empennage kit and hopefully is of the same general design as your -7. What I did was install a 1/4" nutplate through the forward tooling hole on the outboard rib and by simply stacking a combination of area washers though a bolt on the opposite side of that rib, precise balancing is quickly adjusted. (Rick Galati. Read thread on RV List)

Hurricane-ruined plane gets a second life as a no-fly teaching aid
This RV-7A will never fly again, but it'll teach forever.

I
In Each Greenwich, R.I., through the efforts of teacher Brian Lussier, his students and a string of benefactors along the way, the school's Aviation Career Academy last month took delivery of a Van's RV-7, an $80,000 aircraft built in New Orleans. (more - Reg. required)

Building seats for the RV-6A
SeatsWell, suddenly, apparently overnight, the wiring harness was completed, the top skin was riveted in place, and the canopy was framed in…”only fiberglass to go, and then we can move the plane to the hangar!” I couldn’t be stuck trying to fit an interior in the plane while it was parked miles away, when for years I’ve had the convenience of my garage! So, finally it was time for the procrastination to come to an end. (From the archives of the Tennessee Valley RV Builders Group)

Organizing and operating a flying club
An article in AOPA magazine last month along with Ken Scott's RVator article on partnerships got me noodling on sharing. Turns out AOPA has a full guide on how to set up a flying club. Requires member access. (More)

The RVator Project
If you're like me, you can occasionally remember that the answer to a question you had was in an issue of RVator. But you can't remember what the answer was, nor which RVator it was in. So you start with the last one, and work your way back -- page by page. Year by year. To solve this problem, a small group of us on the Yahoogroups site have been cataloging the subjects by issue, year, date, page and title and plan to make it available first in a spreadsheet format, and then perhaps we can marshall the programming skills of some RVer out there to develop a quick search function that can make this work online somewhere. I'd also like to add SportAviation articles and other how-to's that are published. Using this tool, you would be able to instantly find which issue an article was in, and that pull it off your bookshelf or order the back issue. The spreadsheet from 2002 to the first issue of 2006 is already in the files section of the Yahoogroup. We're now working to get a front-end function and get it posted somewhere for online access. More as it happens (Yahoogroups thread)

FUTURE NEWSLETTERRS

The entire Sun 'n Fun area will have Wi-Fi available (are you listening AirVenture organizers?) . For those of you who are planning to go, to take your laptops and digital cameras, we'd be interested in hearing about your plans. If there are RV-specific forums to be taken in, good pictures of RVs to be had, and updates to be e-mailed, we might consider a daily Sun N'Fun RV hotline that incorporates some of them and points people to the various places where these might be posted to help other folks stay in better touch. Similarly if you have a Web site or run one that will have daily Sun n'Fun content, please let me know.

How do you like it so far?
This is issue #3 of the Hotline. We appreciate your comments. Want to help out? If you see an article, a thread, a news release, a classified, a column that you think might be of interest to an RVer, just send the link in a message. Take note of EAA newsletters, your local paper etc. Generally, I cover the forums and bulletin boards easy enough. The Hotline's goal isn't to develop a lot of content (except that as time allows); it's to tell you where some of it is in a quick-read, digestible format.

CLASSIFIEDS & LETTERS

Employment: Steinair .It's official. We desperately need more help! So, if you could pass along a quick message to the "members" to let them know I'm looking to hire additional help I'd be very appreciative. I'm basically looking for good all around guys/gals to help in my business. Work experience would include avionics, wiring, electronics, panel building, sheet metal work, composite> work, sales, customer phone interaction, graphic design/drafting, etc. Just about everything we do! Anyway, we're happy to hire retirees, ex "Airliners", homebuilders, or just all around smart people! Work hours are basically set yourself, great fringe benefits, and profit sharing. Full time or part time is fine with us. We're small but growing, as we just recently (last week) moved yet again into a new 6,000 sq.ft (80'x80') facility down in Farmington - it's next door to where we were previously.
