Internal
engine inspection
Ron M., an experienced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
(Canadian equivalent of the US A&P) agreed to help
me pull two cylinders to check for any internal engine
corrosion. The engine was "preserved" by Aerosport
Power immediately following the overhaul and test
cell run, but that was seven years ago. If there was
a problem, it would be cheaper and safer to find it
now than deal with the consequences later. (Kevin

Not specifically RV-related (except for the mention
of another RV crash), but one that gets your head
shaking. (Calgary Herald)
RV-10
Service bulletin
A crack was discovered on the F-1010 bulkhead on
Van's RV-10 demonstrator aircraft at ~500 hours
time in service. The F-1010 bulkhead is integral
in the attachment of the forward spar of the horizontal
and vertical stabilizers. Inspection of the F-1010
bulkhead should be accomplished in order to determine
the integrity of the bulkhead. If no crack is found,
recurrent inspections should be accomplished until
F-1010C doublers are installed during the next annual
condition inspection. If a crack is found during
inspection, F-1010C doublers should be installed
prior to further flight in accordance with the instructions
outlined in this bulletin.

MATRIMONY |
Making it work
Aviation
Divorce Syndrome -- you've probably heard reference to
it before. There are usually underlying issues to any
marriage difficulty beyond an RV project, but quite often
it's the RV project that brings it to light. Marriages
fail because, for some strange reason, people don't want
to talk about their marriage when doing so might save
it. ADS struck an RV builder this week, who's been pretty
open about it on Rivetbangers.
Another related thread about marriage and homebuilding
popped up on Van's Air Force.
The
reality is, there are no sure bets, only advice that might
help. Tim Olson's wife, for example, wrote an
excellent piece on his Web site. "Tim and I talked
about the airplane a lot, we still do, and he made me
feel like my opinion mattered," she wrote.
Dan
Checkoway penned "The
Married Dude's Guide to Aircraft Building," that
was surprisingly poignant for someone who was still a
relative newleywed when he wrote it.
In
a 1997
Kitplanes column, Lynn Wainfan hits the "duh"
button with this: "Find out how your wife feels about
you building an airplane."

Living
the RV dream
This video,
uploaded to YouTube this week, could easily be the official
buy-an-RV video from Van's. Gorgeous images, and the words of
an obvious artist.
Big day for
fly-ins
I'd
hoped to be able to get to Boone, Iowa today for the big RV
fly-in, but I couldn't score a lift and by the time I had
an offer, I'd already made some Father's Day weekend plans. The
Web site version of the Hotline will provide some links and
such as people upload stories and pictures on VAF and elsewhere
today (I hope), but also material from the
Scappoose fly-in, happening today also. As always, if you
find links I should highlight, please
e-mail me.

How about
a hydrogen-powered RV?
RVer Mark Navratil of Cedar Rapids, Iowa penned an interesting
article for his EAA chapter newsletter. "Seems conceivable
that within the next
decade, an existing platform like an RV-9 could be converted to
hydrogen power, although the baggage compartment may be the only
place to put the tank. If you could steal the stuff from a car
it might even be affordable. The availability of hydrogen seems
to be the biggest obstacle. (More)

EAA
has added two more videos for homebuilders and potential homebuilders.
Backriveting

Aluminum with a Band Saw. There is also a new one on bolt
nomenclature. RVer Jack Dueck of Calgary is the host for many of these
videos.
Did
you see something interesting this week?
The Hotline will try to publish its roundup of RV-related
news once a week, but will resort to every other week if the news
just isn't there. This week, if you see something interesting
on a Web site worth highlighting, please send
it along.
